Kayakers seeking uncrowded waters will be delighted with Brady’s Lake. Located in Monroe County, in northeastern Pennsylvania, Brady’s Lake is found on State Game Land 127. Access is via a 3.3 mile gravel road off of State Route 940 near Pocono Lake Preserve. There are no facilities, no boat rentals and only electric motors are permitted on the lake.
Pennsylvania’s Fish and Boat Commission manages the manmade 229-acre lake for angling and waterfowl propagation. Surrounded by forest, the environment is ideal for spotting waterfowl as well as other birds and wildlife. Beaver activity can be seen near the northern end of the lake.
Before getting in the kayaks, adventurers may want to take a short walk part of the way across the dam to see the unusual overflow design for the lake. It is interesting to look at from the safety of the walkway. Looking like an enormous rectangular hole in the lake, there is a sudden and significant drop-off from the level of the lake. Watching the water cascading down the sides, it is easy to see the potential danger of this design if a boater paddled too close. From water level, the overflow is marked with a few buoys signaling danger. There are no other safety measures. Boaters should be extremely cautious in this vicinity.
A boat ramp is located adjacent to the paved parking lot. A couple of launch or pull-in spots are also near the parking lot. There are no other convenient pull-in spots around the lake. The northern end of the long, narrow lake has water passages through island-like patches of grass and other vegetation. Kayakers can paddle along these water passages like a maze, winding through in an effort to find the source of the lake, or until beaver construction projects block the way.
