Built in 1901 around an old stagecoach station called Cross Hollows, Shaniko is a town with a fascinating and enriching history. Between 1874 and 1887, Cross Hollows was operated by August Scherneckau. Scherneckau was respected by the Native Americans, none of whom could correctly pronounce his German name; as a result, the shorter, more easily pronounced "Shaniko" emerged as a viable alternative.

Though Shaniko is classified as a ghost town today, 37 humble souls call this place home. If you are visiting Shaniko, you will likely want to learn a little more about the town's background. Such stories can be found and read about in the museum, which is also a gift shop. Be sure to take a look at the wagons, stagecoach remnants, and old automobiles nearby.

Though this quaint little town is easily overlooked as you drive down Highway 97, Shaniko has a lot to offer for families looking for a quick rest and little history.
