McCully Basin is a popular area for backcountry skiers in the Wallowas. It attracts overnight visitors because it is home to Wallowa Alpine Huts' McCully Camp, but it's relatively short approach makes day trips feasible.

Wallowa Alpine Huts also offers guide services for first timers in the area. These are well worth the cost and add a fair amount of safety to your trip.

The approach is easy to follow and has only one switchback. Once you've reached the basin, there is great low-angle skiing on the west side of the basin and bigger lines for advanced skiers off of Aneroid Peak.
