Just 2 miles north of downtown Rockaway, Manhattan Beach is a free, day-use only state park that offers picnic tables, restrooms and beach access.  This 7-mile, open, flat and sandy public beach grandly stretches south to Tillamook Bay and north to Nehalem Bay.

In 1912 the Pacific Railway and Navigation Company opened a rail line that stopped at a nearby summer resort.  The rail station was called “Manhattan Beach,” most likely to attract growth and real estate development.  In spite of the effort, the unincorporated community based around the station never grew, and its post office closed in 1975.
