Jackman Park Campground sits at 7,800 feet and is just 3 miles from Fish Lake on Steens Mountain Loop Road. Although this campground doesn’t sit along a lake (as does its neighbor), its six campsites are nestled among a striking grove of mature aspen trees that create a vivid display of shimmering yellow and gold during late summer and early fall months. Thick trunks and branches also provide each campsite with some privacy and protection from the elements, which is rare in this otherwise exposed landscape.
Potable water and a vault toilet are available, but few other amenities are provided. Jackman Park Campground is a convenient launching point for visits to Kiger Gorge Overlook and Steens Mountain’s summit trails
Note: Jackman Park Campground is only open July 1 through October 31, and it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The Steens Mountain Loop Road is closed seasonally depending on snowpack. Call the Bureau of Land Management's local station in Hines at 541.573.4400 for more information.
Travel Safe
Be sure to fill up on gas before heading out to the Steens Mountain and Alvord Desert area. Year-round gas stations are in Burns and Fields, Oregon. The gas station in Frenchglen is only open during the summer months. Further, cell phone reception is virtually nonexistent in much of the area, so travel with extra provisions. If you plan to explore the area extensively, we highly recommend bringing additional, full gasoline canisters to ensure that you don't get stranded.
