Just south of the Fish Lake Remount Depot parking lot on Highway 126 lies an unmarked, unnamed turnout that leads into a large camping area consisting only of assorted fire rings and a thinned out grove of stately Douglas firs.  This is certainly an unofficial site: no sign announces the turn, there are no amenities, and the place is only as clean as other campers leave it.  On the other hand, the area is large enough to accommodate more than a few campers, it just may be the most convenient alternative for you in terms of location, and it is free.  Also, the vault toilet in the parking area for the Fish Lake Remount Depot may be close enough to be considered useful.

The straightforward clearing, lack of privacy, and proximity to Highway 126 make this area more of a place to sleep than a place to appreciate.  Cold Water Cove Campground and Lost Prairie Campground are two nearby campgrounds that provide more aesthetic enjoyment.  Nevertheless, under the right circumstances, this campsite near Fish Lake may be a perfect fit.  If it is, please use backcountry strategies regarding human waste, try to use existing fire rings, and pack out your garbage (and other garbage, too, if you can!).
