The Whypass Trail System west of Lorane started years ago as an unsanctioned trail network for local riders. As the area expanded, Disciples of Dirt, Eugene's local mountain bike club, began a dialog with private and federal landowners in an attempt to legitimize and protect the great singletrack that its members had worked so hard to create and maintain. In the Summer of 2013 the Whypass Trail System successfully made it through the appeal period of the BLM's environmental assessment, and it became a legitimate recreation area. Thanks to the Disciples, this temple of trails will continue to provide an uplifting experience to all who worship here for years to come.
Currently there is no official map of the area, and the sprawling trail system is unsigned. This should not prevent adventurous riders from exploring the area. Basically, all the trails loop out from (and back to) Carpenter Bypass Road, which serves as the main artery for Whypass. There are often other riders at "The Pile," the main parking area (so named for the huge pile of gravel, used for logging roads in the area, that graces the parking lot) who are usually happy to help newcomers find their way around.
The riding is predominately smooth singletrack that snakes through various stages of tree plantations. There are also a few jump trails. Some of the trails are on private timber company land and may have closures for logging and during fire season. Because it is imperative to maintain a good relationship with land managers, users must respect all signed closures. If you want to become involved in building and maintaining the trails, the Disciples of Dirt hold a number of scheduled rides and events at Whypass and are always looking for help with trail maintenance.
