Whitaker Park is an often overlooked park in the town of Martinsburg. The park features a campground with several sites, two huge picnic shelters, an open field for ball games, hiking trails, a playground, and some incredible waterfalls. Day use is free, and the camping fee is very reasonable at $5 per night for tents and $10 per night for RVs. Running water is available.
Visitors to the park will drive past the many nice campsites before reaching the day use area. At the main parking area, visitors will find two large, reservable picnic shelters. Several picnic tables are included, and charcoal grills are available as well. An open field makes a great place for impromptu ball games, and a a nearby playground is sure to entertain the kids.
The marquee feature of the park is surely the waterfalls on Roaring Brook. Accessed by a network of hiking trails, these enormous cascades vary greatly with the seasons and the rains. At low water it's possible to walk down the dry portions of the river bed following the natural stone steps to get a closer look at the falls. Any places that are damp are incredibly slippery, so use caution. Even in the middle of summer, enough water is funneled into a narrow crack and over several tiers of waterfalls to be breathtaking. Downstream, the entire riverbed drops away in an overhanging falls.
