There is a hidden gem near roadside in Wells, New York, for those who love waterfalls. Jimmy Creek, often referred to as East Jimmy Creek due to a similarly named creek a short distance west, flows down to join the East Branch of the Sacandaga River. Just before its confluence the creek forms a small, beautiful, moss-lined gorge where a waterfall forms at its head.
East Jimmy Creek Falls is approximately 10 feet in height. The creek is split by the rock formation creating two side-by-side drops that enter a medium-sized pool before continuing over several other small drops. Near the road is another small waterfall.
To find this waterfall, it’s best to follow GPS directions to a small pull-off directly across from where the creek exits the forest and flows under the road. There are two paths about 20 feet apart that lead into the woods; however, the easier and more scenic is the one nearest the creek. Follow the unmarked but well-worn path along the creek to the opening of the small gorge and you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the main falls. Visitors will immediately notice the amount of moss and greenery lining the sides of the gorge, which give it an emerald-like appearance.
The trail leads up to a point where you can view the falls from above. Use caution as the soil on the sides seems to be unstable and slippery. It is possible to rock-hop up the creek to get a closer look, but care must be used as the rocks are also extremely slippery. The trail continues to follow the creek beyond the falls, but there are no other significant waterfalls nearby.
While it is possible to visit this area in the winter, parking will shift to an area to the west of the creek where a large pull-off can be found a short distance up the road.
