Wedekind Regional Park offers a handful of easy hikes in the Reno area. The hike to the overlook may be one of the most prominent of those within the park, and is a relatively easy hike leading to some great panoramic views of the Reno, Sparks, and Spanish Springs areas.
Beginning at the Disc Trailhead access lot to Wedekind Regional Park, the rocky hill is visible right away. The path follows a combination of old dirt road and wide track, wrapping around the hill before climbing up to its peak. There are actually multiple ways to reach the peak, as singletrack trails, dirt, and unused paved roads all crisscross the park area, and visitors can opt to lengthen or shorten their routes, as well as taking steeper trails or sticking to the well-worn path.
A simple sign and shelter frame stand at the top, and views wrap around from the Spanish Springs developments to the north to the surprising, tree-filled views of Sparks immediately to the south and Mount Rose climbing in the distant southwest. There is no shade along this hike, and the overlook site can get incredibly windy. This is a family-friendly hike accessible to most ability levels, but come prepared for the elements that may occur on it.
