Thomas Canyon Campground is the main public campground in Lamoille Canyon on the north side of the Ruby Mountains. A large campground consisting of three scenic loops amidst the shade of aspen and cottonwood trees, Thomas Canyon contains 39 sites
Each site has a tent space, a picnic table, and a fire pit with grill, and trees provide a fair amount of privacy from neighboring sites. If all is quiet, it is possible to hear the sounds of the stream running along the edge of the campground.
There are three loops here: One is open through the winter, condition-dependent, at a reduced rate, while the others open in the late spring and have vault toilets, running water, and trash collection.
Loop C is easily the most scenic, and the best spot to take a dip in the creek sits just below the bridge between sites 36 and 37. The trailhead to the Thomas Canyon Trail, a 5-mile round-trip hike to a lake, is across from site 31.
Medium-sized RVs are okay, though there are no pull-through sites and no dump station at the campground. There are several double sites, and group camping is located at the separate Terraces Group Camp which lies further up Lamoille Canyon.
A large part of Thomas Canyon Campground is only open seasonally, and snowy conditions in this part of the Ruby Mountains can come early and last late, so check on conditions before planning a trip here.
