The loop trail around Peak 3844, also known as Horse Peak, is an easy hike filled with great views of the distant colored hills of Red Rock Canyon. The trail is well maintained and popular with mountain bikers.
Begin by finding the trailhead off Calico Basin Road. While there isn’t a proper paved parking lot, there is ample room to park alongside the road. A nice bonus to this hike and others in this area is you don’t have to enter the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive, therefore avoiding the fee and required reservations.
At the trailhead you’ll see a sign for Gene’s Trail. Ignore this and instead take the trail to the right. This will set you up on a counter-clockwise loop around Peak 3844. Although the loop is pretty straightforward, there are several crisscrossing trails and intersections where it can be possible to get off track. A GPS may be helpful in keeping you on course, but in general if it seems that you are heading away from Peak 3844 instead of circling around it then you probably took a wrong turn!
Along the eastern side of the loop you’ll have great views down toward Las Vegas including a view of the Strat. The trail follows near, not in, a small dry wash, and then begins to curve around the backside of Peak 3844. The are a few junctions here -- continue along the obvious path curving left.
As you work your way along the western side of the peak you’ll come to a high point that offers fantastic views toward the Red Rock Canyon area. The trail continues along, descending gently until returning to the trailhead you began from.
