The Hiking Club Trail (see the end of this article for information about the Hiking Club) at Temperance River State Park is a 2.2-mile lollipop loop. This trail takes hikers past the scenic Temperance River gorge and through the forest. Dogs are allowed on this trail when on a leash. Parking for this hike can be found along both sides of Highway 61, just northeast of the bridge over the Temperance River. Since this parking area is not really part of the State Park a permit is not needed. The trail is well marked, with maps at trail intersections. Look for blue Hiking Club signs as you travel this trail.
The beginning of the trail is paved for a short distance and takes visitors to a viewpoint of Hidden Falls. After the Hidden Falls viewing area, the trail becomes gravel for a bit and then becomes more rugged with rock stairs that take the hiker to the cliffs above the gorge. The trail follows the gorge for about a quarter of a mile and has many scenic overlooks. After leaving the gorge area, the trail follows the Temperance River for about a third of a mile. The trail moves away from the river and through the woods for another quarter of a mile or so.
When you come upon the intersection ‘D’ sign, take a right. Follow the trail through the forest for 0.4 miles; then take a right at intersection ‘E’. Continue on the trail for another 0.4 miles. Take a right at intersection ‘J’; this will take you back to the Temperance River just above the gorge area. From here, retrace your steps back to the packing area.
The Minnesota State Parks Hiking Club program encourages hikers to hike a designated Hiking Club Trail at most state parks. A Hiking Club password is found on all of these hikes. You can earn patches, free camping, and even a plaque (if you hike all of the Hiking Club trails) for participating in the club. A Hiking Club kit can be purchased at most state parks for $14.95 (as of 2021). More information about the program can be found here.
A map of the park and its hiking trails can be found here.
