The Gitchi-Gami State Trail is paved trail project that is in progress. When finished, the trail will be 89 miles long and run from Two Harbors to Grand Marais along Minnesota’s scenic North Shore of Lake Superior. As of 2020 about a third of the trail has be completed. This trail is for non-motorized traffic only.

The Temperance River Segment is three miles long and runs between the towns of Schroeder and Tofte.  Parking is available at three spots; at a wayside in Schroeder, at the Town Park in Tofte, and at Temperance River State Park (a state park pass is require to park here). There are only 4 parking spots at Temperance River State Park; these spots are located near the Park Office. At the state park there is a short connector trail that provides access to the Gitchi-Gami.

Much of this segment runs through Temperance River State Park away from highway 61. The trail does have some gently rolling hills through wooded terrain. The highlight of this segment is the bridge over the Temperance River Gorge.

The official website for the Gitchi-Gami State Trail can be found here.
