Ritchey Woods is a scenic, 127-acre nature preserve, originally willed by Dr. James O. Ritchey to The Nature Conservancy to assure its protection and now managed by the city of Fishers, Indiana. The mission of the preserve is “to heighten awareness for the natural environment, maintain habitat diversity, and instill a sense of stewardship for all living things." As is typical in nature preserves, there are common-sense rules to follow, like no picking or collecting flowers, mushroom, or leaves, or always stay on the trail and do not disturb plants or wildlife. But following rules clearly designed to preserve the area is a small price to pay to connect with nature in such a pristine and cherished environment.
Visitors can hike or run the nine different trails in the park, totaling about 2.25 miles. The trails will take you through a wonderful variety of beautiful landscapes, including woods, prairies, wetlands, and even a small swamp area. There is even a small Osborn family pioneer graveyard you can visit right above Cheeney Creek in the northeast section of the park. If you bring a dog, remember that it must be kept on a leash at all times. While there is a bicycle rack next to the gravel parking area, bicycles are prohibited within the park.
A large shelter with picnic tables, bathrooms, and a cabin exist on the property, as does a prairie observation deck—and observe wildlife you will! Wildlife abounds in the park. Check in when you arrive; guided hikes and hands-on programs are available for children, families, scout groups, and school field trips. Or just go ahead and take your own self-guided tour through the property and experience for yourself what a magnificent green space this truly is.
