The tiny town of Stanley, Idaho (population 63), is located in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountain country and a short distance from four large wilderness areas. The area has incredible recreation opportunities, including hiking, horse packing, mountain biking, river running, lake activities, and just kicking back and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Some of the best camping options in the area are the four little campgrounds located just east of Stanley along the Salmon River: Salmon River, Casino Creek, Riverside and Mormon Bend. They all have their own character and features, but all are very nice campgrounds.
Mormon Bend is the most developed of the four Stanley campgrounds and also the furthest from town. It has paved roads, parking pads, and a boat ramp with day use parking. There are few trees for shade, but the sites are large. This campground also has its own hot spring, which is a bit primitive, and one must cross the river to access it, which is not easy when the water is high. Late in the summer, when the nice river sites at Salmon River and Riverside Campgrounds close due to spawning salmon, Mormon Bend is the most popular campground of the four. Mormon Bend also opens earlier in the spring, so it is popular with steelhead fishermen. Like the others, vault toilets and hand-pumped water are provided.
All four of these campgrounds are first-come, first-served only, and the best sites fill up early.
