Honomalino Bay and black sand beach may be one of the most rewarding easy-to-moderate hikes on the Big Island. The beach is a mix of black and white sand, and is only accessible via a 2/3 mile hike from the fishing village of Miloli'i.
Beginning at Miloli'i Beach Park, the trail is a narrow single track that fluctuates between rainforest skirting the edges of private property, and bare exposed path over lava rock. Though short, the trail requires some technical ability, since much of it is climbing over slippery rocks, squatting beneath downed tree trunks, or navigating through sharp lava rock fields.
What awaits at the end of the trail is Honomalino Beach, a half-mile crescent strip of black sand beach with tall coconut palms lining the sands edge. Waves wash up on the sandy shore, providing a relaxed bay great for swimming. As Miloli'i Park tends to be used mostly by locals, chances are good that there will be very few other people along the trail.
On a sunny day, Honomalino Bay looks like a postcard. While reaching this beach requires some extra effort, visitors will absolutely be rewarded by sharing the picturesque secluded beach with few, if any, others.
There are no amenities of any kind at the beach, and no water located at Miloli'i Beach Park. Plan ahead for this one. Please respect private property, as much of this trail skirts private homes.
