Honoli'i Beach Park is located about 2 miles north of Hilo, and is a popular area beach for surfing.
Tucked down a hill at the mouth of Honoli'i Stream, the lush beach park has a stretch of lawn area with tables, pebbly beach area, and a large pond area just before the stream flows into the sea.
The beach is popular with locals, and onstreet parking along the road atop the cliffs may be hard to come by. Many show up to stand atop the cliffs and watch the surfers below.
Down a flight of stairs, a bathroom has showers and tables where locals offer food on Sundays. The pebbly beach tends to have a steep dropoff, and waves can crash right at the shore. Signs warn against swimming here due to rough conditions. Surfers will head out to the break at the north end of the beach.
The stream creates a large swimming hole which is great for families, and while the center can get pretty deep the edges stay pretty shallow and is protected from incoming waves.
Lifeguards are present on the beach.
Honolii's biggest drawback is that it can get very crowded. It can get hard to find parking on the shoulder of the narrow road above, and can be a bit of a traffic jam making your way through the crowded groups of onlookers. But if you're prepared for that, the surfing and swimming at this beach park are unmatched in the Hilo area.
Honoli'i Beach Park is open daily from 7am to 7pm.
