Van Pugh South Campground, located at the southern end of gorgeous Lake Lanier, is a wonderful spot to camp out on the lake. Boasting 55 total campsites, 18 primitive-only tent sites, and 37 sites with water and electric hookups, the scenic campgrounds is nestled into a small peninsula jutting out into the lake. Most of the campsites have direct access to the lake, and the lakeside views are nothing short of phenomenal.
Amenities include two bath houses with warm running water, flushing toilets, and showers. Each campsite has a fire pit, grill, and picnic table. Note, however, that some tent sites are not very large and you may have difficulty pitching an eight-person or larger tent. A boat ramp is available for use, as is a boat trailer parking area. Camp hosts live in the campground in season, and have firewood available for purchase. The campground is heavily forested, and shady spots abound.
Be sure to bring your fishing pole, kayak, or boat as this campground was made for water related recreation. Or at the very least, bring you bathing suit. The south side of the campground in particular is naturally protected from high motor boat traffic and makes a perfect spot for non-motored water sports such as swimming, kayaking, and paddle boarding. The major complaint with the campground, and this would apply to virtually all camping on Lake Lanier, is the occasional party boat blasting loud music through the night -- especially on weekends.
