Tybee Island is known for its beaches, and along with them, the massive crowds and expensive parking that come with such a destination. Those looking for a respite from the touristy ocean beaches on the island can stop short of them, and head to the much quieter river beach at Tybee Channel Beach.
Accessible from a couple hidden plank walkways in a residential neighborhood as you first enter Tybee Island from the west, Tybee Channel Beach is a crescent sandy shore lying in the estuary along the southern bank of the Savannah River. These beaches are generally a destination for those who live or are staying in the neighborhood, but the sands are far less crowded and provide a much more relaxed beach experience than Tybee's ocean beaches.
The walkways to the beach are signed and can be accessed from the northern ends of either Byers or Polk Streets. Colorful signs announce Byers Beach and Polk Street Beach, however the wide stretch of sand is effectively a single beach area.
The challenge to heading to these beaches is finding parking, as spots are extremely limited. There are two parking spots next to the walkway entrance on Byers Street, and several more metered spots about a block south of the Polk Street walkway entrance. If these areas are full, it's possible to park for free along the curb on Highway 80 and walk a couple of blocks to the beach access points.
There are no amenities of any kind located at Tybee Channel Beach. The waters here are shallow and generally much more calm than the ocean. It's also surreal watching massive cargo container ships floating by throughout the day.
