The Ball Field Camp Area is really little more than a field on the top of a mountain that is open for camping. Nevertheless, campers beware, this field is literally out in the middle of nowhere! But for many of us, that’s a good thing. You will find few places to pitch a tent right next to your car in such a remote location. Peace and solitude abound, and so does the wildlife.

Located on the top of Little Bald Mountain and straddling the Chattahoochee National Forest to the south and the Cohutta Wilderness Area to the north, this primitive camp area has a unique history. This location was formerly used by Cherokee Indians, who would meet to play stickball games to settle disputes between tribes. It is said that the women spectators would dance during the games, stomping on black beads that represented players on the other team.

Stargazers—this open field will provide you with a rare, wide-open break through the canopy, and the remote location provides some of the darkest skies you will find at night.

Campsites are just inside the tree ine along the entire perimeter of the field and are first-come, first served. There are no designated campsites, so you can take as much or as little space as you like. The camping is primitive with no amenities—we’re talking pack-it-in, pack-it-out, bring your own shovel and toilet paper type of primitive. Sandwiched between the Emery Creek Trailhead to the south and the Tearbritches Trailhead to the north, the site is also a great place for backpackers to spend the night after a long day on the trail.
