Turkey Creek Park, owned and operated by the city of Niceville, sports one of the most unique swimming experiences in northwest Florida.
A wooden boardwalk, stretching exactly a mile, borders Turkey Creek and the frequently flooded forest on either side. The boardwalk is raised, giving walkers a different perspective on the adjacent sand-bottomed creek. Various interpretive signs identify plant and animal species along the way, while overlooks provide scenic photography spots. Multiple swimming docks make the creek accessible, and floating from one end to the other—and then doing it again—is popular for kids and adults of all ages. A canoe/kayak launch at one end of the boardwalk is also available.
Birding is another popular activity at the park. The site has been designated as part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, and nearly 100 species have been recorded here. In the summer months, visitors should keep their eyes peeled for swallow-tailed kites, beautiful raptors that occasionally dip low over the tree line with their deeply forked tails to chase flying insects.
For those with mobility problems, the park can provide golf cart rides to different points along the boardwalk to those who call ahead in advance at 850.685.9405. The park also includes a covered picnic pavilion, vending machines, and restrooms.
The park is close to a military base, and loud planes are a regular occurrence.
