Paynes Prairie State Preserve is a fascinating and beautiful area to explore. Basically a huge wetland with several lakes that vary in size considerably depending on rainfall, the preserve is a birders' paradise and also offers fishing, hiking, biking, and camping. The established campground is a lovely little area of dense trees that offers much privacy to the sites.

The campground is set on two one-way loops and all sites have electric and water hookups, even the walk-in tent sites. Most of the car and RV sites are quite long and wide. There are two bathrooms with showers, and very close by there is a boat ramp and large picnic area. About a mile up the park road is the visitor center, which has excellent exhibits and an observation tower overlooking the prairie. The park closes at 8 p.m., but campers in the park are free to use the observation tower to spot wildlife at sunrise and sunset. There are several trails near the campground, the closest being the Chacala loop trails. As of March of 2019, some of the trails were partially closed due to high water levels.
