Oscar Scherer State Park's campsites are comfortably shaded by oak and pine trees and surrounded by saw palmetto and sable palm fronds. Trailheads are accessible throughout the campground, making hiking as simple as putting on sneakers and taking a stroll.
Much of the park property is managed for the endemic Florida scrub jay. Visitors should look for this large blue and gray songbird along the sandy paths weaving through the scrub habitat dotted with tall pine trees and bare trunks from trees long deceased. Additionally, over 200 bird species have been recorded within the park boundaries (Oscar Scherer is a site on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail), and campers have dawn access to the best hotspots. In total, the park includes over 15 miles of trails. The paved Legacy Trail also runs through the park, making rollerblading possible.
The park offers a wide range of amenities, activities, and recreation opportunities. Junior Ranger fun and guided tours are often scheduled during weekends, as are Friday night movies in the park's nature center. Fishing, swimming, and wildlife viewing are all popular year round.
Note: There is significant road noise for some of the campsites. If you are sensitive to noise, bring earplugs.
