The Aruba Donkey Sanctuary is a nonproft animal sanctuary run by volunteers and supported by donations and the sales of snacks and gifts onsite, not to mention food that visitors can purchase and feed to the animals.
Located not far from the gates of Arikok National Park, the Donkey Sanctuary gives visitors a chance to walk amongst the animals, as well as pet and feed them. Donkeys were once the primary method of transportation on the island, though after being replaced by cars, many were left to fend for themselves, which brought a sharp decline in the population of the animals.
Today the sanctuary offers a home for the majority of the donkeys residing on Aruba, where they are cared for and protected.
Visitors can walk the grounds, or visit the central gift shop, which provides a large shaded space, a small area where visitors can buy snacks and ice cream, a gift shop with a variety of items, and food for the animals. Donkeys are familiar with the routine, and will come right up to the fence to eat out of your hand.
The Aruba Donkey Sanctuary is open daily from 9am to 4pm, and there is no charge to visit. Donations are welcome.
