Finding camping close to Denver is potentially a nightmare unless you are using an RV park or a KOA. Luckily, Sawmill Hikers Campground is a fantastic hike-in campground at White Ranch Open Space Park just outside of Golden, Colorado.
Camping here is by permit only, and you can obtain these at the Jeffco Open Space Office, 700 Jefferson County Parkway, Suite 100, in Golden during regular business hours. There are 10 campsites, each with a picnic table and metal fire ring with grill. Campground stays are limited to no more than a total of six nights within a 30-day period with a maximum of three tents per site. There are restrooms here, and each campsite is provided with firewood. Even though there is limited space, the mile hike in tends to leave this campsite empty during the week. There is also additional camping at the Sourdough Springs Equestrian Campground about 1.5 miles away.
White Ranch Open Space is rich in it's wildlife and harbors both vast meadows and rough rock outcroppings. White Ranch boasts over 20 miles of multi-use trails over both rugged and smooth terrain for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. This is a great place to come get away from the city, and Sawmill Hikers Campground is an ideal base camp to explore this area or further into the foothills.
