Heaton Bay Campground

The Dillon Lake area is a wonderful and scenic recreation venue in all seasons. Winter sports are a huge draw with five major ski areas nearby. In summer and fall, camping in one of the several national forest campgrounds around the lake is a great way to experience this beautiful area. Each of the Dillon area campgrounds has different advantages and its own character. Heaton Bay offers lake views and some lakeside sites, a very convenient location from I-70 (with the resultant road noise), and some water/electric hook up sites.

There are five loops in the campground, with one (D Loop) dedicated to tent camping only. Some of these tent sites are quite private and have great views (and no generator noise). C Loop has 15 hookup sites but generally poor views. All of the loops are reasonably spacious with decent privacy. The campground has more trees than some of the other campgrounds on the lake that were clear cut several years ago due to the beetle infestations that have affected so much of the Rocky Mountain area.

Heaton Bay campground is very convenient to the 18-mile Dillon Reservoir Bike Loop, the towns of Frisco and Dillon, and the vast hiking opportunities in the nearby Ten Mile Range and Gore Range. The ski resorts of Breckenridge and Keystone are very close and offer many summer activities, and the large and magnificent Dillon Lake offers many opportunities for hiking, fishing, boating, and even kite boarding on the winter ice.
