Cow Creek South Campground is an incredible camping spot in the north end of Summit County, Colorado, that is surrounded by sage brush, shoreline willows and cottonwood, expansive views of the Gore Mountain range, and the deep blue waters of Green Mountain Reservoir. It is located just south of Cow Creek North Campground.
Made possible by the construction of the Green Mountain Dam, which was completed in 1942 as a part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, the reservoir is now popular with those interested in angling, boating and camping. Cow Creek South Campground is the largest of five campgrounds surrounding the reservoir, but you'll still have to go to the small town of Heeney to access a boat ramp. The campground provides vault toilets, and each site has a fire ring/grill and picnic table, but there are no other amenities, so be sure to pack in ample water to last the entire length of your stay.
The reservoir is stocked annually with rainbow trout, lake trout, brown trout and kokanee. Master Bait & Tackle in Heeney (970.724.3677) provides provisions for those in need.
