Table Mountain Campground

By far the biggest campground in the Wrightwood area, Table Mountain Campground offers sprawling campsites, stunning vistas and the peace and quiet many campers look for in a wilderness escape. Table Mountain Campground is typically open between the first Friday in May through the end of September. Forty-one walk-in campsites are situated amid grassy meadows and old-growth ponderosa pines on top of Table Mountain at over 7,000 feet in elevation. And while the location preserves the secluded character of the San Gabriel Mountains, it also remarkably convenient: at about 2 miles away from Big Pines and State Route 2, it is quiet and peaceful and within striking distance of nearby adventure opportunities like Big Horn Mine Trail and sections of the Pacific Crest Trail. Those who prefer to stick a little closer to the campsite will find the Table Mountain Nature Trail, which runs through the campground and loops for an easy 3 miles.

Its location on the top of Table Mountain endows Table Mountain Campground with the best views of any campground in the area, including vistas across the San Gabriel Mountains and the nearby Mountain Park Ski Area—indeed, Table Mountain itself was at one point a ski area, and the remnants of a long-defunct ski lift are in evidence. However, its high altitude and exposure can make winds whip through the campground, especially at night, so be sure to prepare appropriately with durable anchoring equipment, and keep loose items packed at all times. Additionally, campers should remain vigilant for critters, in particular scorpions, which like to hide in loose items and firewood, and rattlesnakes, which the camp host will dispose of if alerted. Table Mountain Campground is operated by American Land & Leisure, which staffs a host to clean and maintain the grounds during the season.

Sites range from grassy meadows to shaded hillside sites—where views will be spectacular and winds more treacherous—but most are equipped with a picnic table and fire pit. Bear boxes are available at some, but not all, sites. There are three vault toilet areas in the campground, and piped water is available in several locations during the season. An amphitheater on-site views movies occasionally during the season. Be advised that, while the campground is equipped for RV’s up to 34 feet, the access road is windy and such large vehicles will have a difficult time maneuvering.
