Pothole Dome

Perhaps the most easily accessed elevated view of Tuolumne Meadows, Pothole Dome lies just a stone’s throw from Highway 120/Tioga Pass Road and can be summited with a minor amount of calorie-burning effort. The dome gets its name from the pothole-shaped holes that have worn into the granite from water erosion over the years. Pothole dome is located on the western edge of Tuoloumne Meadows overlooking the Wild and Scenic Tuolumne River, Lembert Dome, and a plethora of Yosemite high-country peaks and summits.

For access, follow the short trail that leaves from the parking area that is located on the north side of the highway as you first enter Tuolumne Meadows from the west. This trail bends around the edge of the meadow that hugs the base of Pothole Dome. The easiest route up the dome is the east facing slope.

This is a perfect climbing spot for families with kids. Kids will enjoy romping around on the granite, and the views are nothing short of phenomenal.
