Peavine Campground

The Peavine Campground is one of the more accessible campgrounds along the Big Pine Highway. Situated adjacent the busy thoroughfare, the campground offers four sites for campers and vehicle access. Its proximity to the highway makes for easy access, but the location also sacrifices privacy and the feel of wilderness available at campgrounds deeper in the San Gabriels. This isn’t the campground to “get away from it all.”

Still, Peavine is at a high elevation and close to ski areas in Big Pines and hiking throughout the area. It sees heavy use, but be sure to note that it is typically inaccessible after the heavier winter snows. In addition to the slopes, nearby hiking trails beckon the avid snowshoer. And since a stay at Peavine Campground requires only a daily or annual National Forest Adventure Pass ($5 and $30, respectively), it’s the most economical option available. Paired with the site amenities, including pit toilets and fire pits, Peavine makes a good fallback for early winter and summer excursions in the area.
