Panther Flat Campground in Six Rivers National Forest is located a stone’s throw from the banks of the Smith River, America's longest free-flowing with a National Wild and Scenic River designation. The campground is situated on a broad flat that is shaded beneath a forest of Douglas fir and cedar. Madrone trees and huckleberry make up much of the understory. The campground is open year-round and is an affordable option when compared to the National and State Park Campgrounds located in the heart of the Del Norte coast redwoods just a few miles west along Highway 199.

Popular with anglers, Panther Flat campground provides excellent access for fishing the Smith River’s famous steelhead and salmon runs. The campground is also popular as a summer swimming hole destination; many use the day use area below the camping area for swimming access. Panther Flat Campground is within the Smith River National Recreation Area, which forms a northern border with Redwood National and State Parks.

There is no potable water at all for this and the other two campgrounds nearby (Grassy Flat and Patrick Creek) for the 2018 season due to water system failure so bring lots of water (there are still flush toilets here). Great site to camp by the river for swimming.
