Memorial Park is located in the town of Susanville, California. The small park features everything you’d expect to find at a city park including a playground, plenty of open space to play or toss a frisbee, picnic areas and even a skate park. But perhaps the best part about Memorial Park is that it is home to both the Lassen Historical Museum and the historic Roop’s Fort.
Roop’s Fort, also known as the Roop House, Roop’s Trading Post or Fort Defiance was built in 1854 by Issac Roop. Interestingly, the town of Susanville was once called Roopstown but was later renamed for Roop’s daughter Susan.
The fort was originally used as a trading post and stopping place by emigrant trains, but served a role in the “Sagebrush War” between California and Nevada. This little known fight was essentially a dispute over boarders between some Plumas County and Lassen County citizens.
Roop’s Fort was used by Nevadans during the “war”, but California won and Roop’s Fort became part of Lassen County.
Today the fort is a California National Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
