Malibu Bluffs Park occupies 6 acres of land where Malibu Canyon Road meets the Pacific Coast Highway. It boasts a plethora of family-friendly attractions including a whale watching station, picnic area, playground, sports field, two baseball diamonds, and the Michael Landon Community Center. The Community Center is used for educational classes that are open to the public, and it can also be rented for private events. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the park.
There is a definite emphasis on family at this park. Dogs traipse across the huge open sports field while kids mingle on the playground. Soccer and baseball teams of various ages practice on the field and baseball diamonds. Joggers make their way around the park on a smooth path. Both Pepperdine University and the Pacific Ocean are visible in the background. The beautiful view and relaxed environment make this a popular place to pass a sunny afternoon.
There are currently plans to expand the park by several dozen acres. In 2015 the Parks and Recreation Commission proposed that the land be used for a skatepark, outdoor pool, amphitheater, adventure center, dog park, playground, and additional trails and sports fields. This plan, entitled the Malibu Bluffs Parkland Project, has been approved by the Malibu City Council.
Malibu Bluffs Park lies within the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy zone, and it hosts a rich variety of plant and animal life. While the popularity of the park keeps bears and mountain lions away, there is a good chance that you will catch a glimpse of a squirrel or a rabbit. Mice are indigenous as well, much to the delight of the area’s many hawks and owls. Salamanders, newts, and frogs also call Malibu home. Migratory birds from both the north and the south can often be spotted as Malibu is in the middle of the Pacific Flyway.
