Indian Well Campground

Indian Well Campground sits adjacent to the visitor center in Lava Beds National Monument. The landscape here is rough terrain, and the campground reflects this, with dry, hot summers and icy, cold winters. The campground itself isn't particularly scenic, but it instead offers a great base camp for exploration of the local lava tunnels and hikes within the national monument.

There are 41 sites, each containing a picnic table and fire pit with grill, on a couple of different loops. The few trees throughout the campground provide a little bit of shade during the summer, but they do not offer much in the way of privacy. Its remote location generally ensures that privacy won't be a huge issue, and the campground is not usually crowded.

The sites are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Cost is $10 per night, which is payable in an envelope drop at the one central informational board. Bathrooms provide running water, though there are no showers or RV dump stations in the campground.

Some of the sites have a large enough parking lot to accommodate a mid-sized RV, but no sites offer pull-through access or power, and large RVs should most likely try to avoid Indian Well.

A short trail leads to the visitor center, near which several lava tunnels can be accessed on foot.

The campground has an amphitheater with a video screen and fire pits, and a schedule of guided tours and night programs in the amphitheater is posted on the informational board. Pets are permitted in the campground, but they must be leashed.

Firewood may be available from the camp host for $8 per bundle.
