While the campground seems to be the least scenic in the line of three camping areas along this stretch of coast -- El Capitan State Beach Campground and Refugio State Beach Campground being the two others -- Gaviota State Park Campground offers access to the widest variety of hiking trails and backcountry area of the three.

The campground is a single large lawn area with a loop road that wraps through it. Driveways are numbered and reservable in advance, and large enough to fit medium-sized RVs. There are no hook ups here. Two bathroom buildings and several water spigots serve the campground.

The best sites seem to be the lower numbered spots, which are set amongst trees and shade, unlike the majority of the campground which remains exposed to the sun.

The park's day use and beach areas are immediately adjacent to the campground, allowing campers to walk across a parking lot to reach the beach and pier.

A large train trestle dominates the skyline toward the ocean, with the rare passing train adding something to the ambiance of the campground.

Hiker biker sites are available for $10 per person. Dogs are permitted on leash in the campground and day use area, however not on the beach.

Owing to its oceanfront location, Gaviota State Park Campground often fills up well ahead of time during the summer months. Those looking to stay during these months should familiarize themselves with the reservation system and plan on booking as early as the system allows.

The nearest food and amenities are in the town of Lompoc or a ways away on the 101. Campers should plan ahead.
