Like the Geology Tour Road, the Covington Flat roads offer a chance to experience the solitude and vast vistas of Joshua Tree National Park without having to hike a long distance. Eureka Peak is a prime destination when exploring this area of the park. Very much like the Keys View lookout, Eureka Peak offers views of the Coachella Valley and Mount San Jacinto to the east and south. Eureka Peak is over 300 feet higher and offers better views to the north and east for a 360-degree panorama of the Mojave Desert and the surrounding mountains.

Covington Road enters the park from the town of Yucca Valley and parallels the California Riding and Hiking Trail, which traverses the park in a 35-mile semicircle from Black Rock Canyon Campground to the Oasis Visitor Center. The road leads to backcountry trailheads. There is a small parking area at the end of the 10-mile drive, and it is a five-minute hike to the top of Eureka Peak

Note: The road is a maintained gravel road that can be rutted, especially after a rain. High-clearance passenger vehicles should have no problem, but check with the rangers for the latest road conditions.
