Eagle Peak Loop

Reaching a height of 3,849 feet, Mount Diablo is one of the tallest peaks in the Bay Area. Formed by tectonic shifts in the earth's plates, Mount Diablo grows between 3 and 5 millimeters every year. Many animal species call the area home, including bald eagles, mountain lions, and tarantulas. Interestingly, the mountain has had many different names over the centuries. It was first called Tuyshtak by the Ohlone, Supemenenu by the Miwok, and Cerro Alto de los Bolbones by the Spanish. The name "Mount Diablo" is derived from the daring escape from the Spanish and the subsequent disappearance into the mountains by Chupcan Native Americans in 1805. Mount Diablo is at the center of the 20,000-acre Mount Diablo State Park. The park was originally established in 1931, and it continues to grow in size today.

The 7-mile Eagle Peak loop explores the northern area of the park. Note that trails in this area are very exposed, and you will need to carry lots of water. You will begin your hike at the Mitchell Canyon Trailhead and follow signs for the Mitchell Rock Trial. Once you reach the Mitchell Rock overlook, continue on the Eagle Peak Trail. Watch for poison oak on both sides of the trail. The going can be a bit steep as you hike past Twin Peaks and up to Eagle Peak. Take a break and have a snack, then continue along the ridge until you meet the larger fire road. Follow the road east for a hundred feet, then take the small Back Creek Trail north. The trail will be descending quickly along this route. Once the hiking flattens out, you have a choice of trails back to your car. The Bruce Lee Trail follows a direct route through green grassy fields and terminates on the opposite end of the parking area.
