Dry Lagoon Beach is a short stretch of sand within the Humboldt Lagoons State Park. Just a short drive off Highway 101, two large cliff sides and rock walls enclose this beach, making the road the only access other than by trail. A couple of picnic tables can be found here for relaxing while listening to the crashing of the waves and looking for birds within the Dry Lagoon.
Dry Lagoon once held water, but it was drained by farmers in the early 1900s. They attempted to grow several different types of crops, but the venture proved to not be economical, so they abandoned their efforts. There are, however, several other lagoons nearby within Humboldt Lagoons State Park that still contain large amounts of water.
Within Humboldt Lagoons State Park over 200 bird species have been found, making this beach an excellent area for bird watching. Bald eagles, herons, egrets, peregrine falcons, and snowy plover all reside within the park. In addition, black bears and elk can occasionally be seen on the edges of the lagoon and beach.
