Nestled in a thick riparian woodland, Coldbrook Campground boasts 20 campsites at the confluence of Coldbrook and Soldier Creeks. Available on a first-come, first-serve basis, it sites here are frequented less than those at the nearby Crystal Lake campgrounds while still being in close proximity to the canyon’s hikes and recreation, which makes it an excellent alternative to the larger, more congested campgrounds. That being said, it still sees heavy use on weekends and holidays during the warmer seasons, so be sure to plan accordingly during these times of the year.
Each campsite can fit up to eight people and two vehicles. Much of it is well-shaded thanks to the overarching foliage. The campground is full-service and attended by a camp host who lives at the site year round. Each campsite has a fire pit and grill, and picnic tables are available within the grounds. Officially, there is no potable water on the campgrounds, and all water must be drawn from the creek and boiled, though reports of potable water at each campsite suggest otherwise. Be prepared: bring extra fuel or your preferred purification method.
Access to the Smith Mountain trailhead is a third of a mile away, and Lewis Falls, a 50-foot cascade along Soldier Creek, is a little over two miles away. In addition to the scenic and rugged beauty of the San Gabriels, nearby Coldbrook Creek springs from an extraordinarily long culvert that will surely amaze. Evidence of the 2002 Curve Fire remains, despite restoration efforts in the area.
Note: Campsites at Coldbrook Campground is open year-round and are run on a first-come, first-served basis. Although water faucets are located at campground, there is currently no potable water available. Call the local ranger station at 626.574.1613 for details.
