With a Flagstaff road sign in the foreground, the San Francisco Peaks in the background, and ponderosa pines all around, this field of yellow flowers beside the highway is as "Flagstaff" as it gets. A signature location for this mountain town, the Fort Valley flower field is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike during the summer.
When driving between Flagstaff and Arizona Snowbowl or the Grand Canyon, this is a quick stop to pull over and get some beautiful photos. No matter the type of camera, photographers of all abilities will be able to get amazing photos here. You can't go wrong with the natural color and composition of this landscape.
What is normally a dry, grassy field bursts to life with monsoon rains. The bright yellow flowers first pop up in late July and stay throughout August. During this time, even the casual passerby can't help but notice the brilliant display right beside the road.
The field is at the intersection of Fort Valley Road (US-180) and Shultz Pass Road. To stop and enjoy it, park on the shoulder of Shultz Pass Road, and you can walk along one side of a barbed fence to take photos. The flowers are on private property, so please be mindful.
