This loop hike around Chimney Rock offers great views and a chance to hike an unofficial trail to the base of the chimney. This hike can be accessed by two trailheads, the Andante Trailhead or the Thunder Mountain Trailhead. This guide will follow the route from Andante Trailhead.

Begin by following the Thunder Mountain Trail out from the trailhead. You’ll soon come to a junction with the Lower Chimney Rock Trail. If hiking the loop counter-clockwise, take a right to stay on Thunder Mountain. Keep an eye open for rock climbers as you travel around the eastern side of Chimney Rock.

Next you’ll take a left on the Chimney Rock Pass Trail. This section of the hike gains elevation until reaching the pass between Chimney Rock and the impressive Capitol Butte. Shortly after the pass you’ll spot a side trail (to the left) that ascends up the north side of Chimney Rock. Taking the steep user trail will lead to the base of the chimney and offer fantastic views (classic Sedona landmarks such as the Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock and Courthouse Butte can be seen in the distance). Climbing up the chimney requires proper equipment and skill.

Continuing along the loop you’ll descend and then hike around the western slopes of Chimney Rock. Carry onward until you again reach the initial junction with the Thunder Mountain Trail. Continue straight (right) and arrive back at the trailhead and end of the hike.
