While it's true that most national and California State Parks do not allow dogs on trails, there are still plenty of of scenic on and off-leash options around San Francisco well suited for strolls, hikes and trail runs with your canine companion. Each of these destinations are dog friendly, but please check the regulations and adhere to the leash laws of each individual area.
While dogs are allowed on leash or under voice control in some areas of the Marin Headlands, it is important to note they are prohibited in other areas. The apparent rule of thumb is that dogs are allowed off-leash north of Tennessee Valley Road, starting on the Miwok Trail and running up and over the hill to Muir Beach. Dogs are not allowed at all south of Tennessee Valley Road. Be sure to check before you hit the trial.
Dogs are not allowed on all sections of the coastal trail. They are allowed from Golden Gate Bridge to the junction with Wolf Ridge Trail, Rodeo Beach to Muir Beach, and the Wolf Ridge Loop. Dogs are allowed on leash or under voice control in some areas.
Remember that dogs must remain on leash in all parking lots and picnic areas. When out on the trails, respect the leash laws and follow these rules for Dog Etiquette on the Trail. Have fun!
