Rocky Point Recreation Area is located about 8 miles east of Belle Fourche off South Dakota Highway 212. The park is located on the 8,000-acre Belle Fourche Reservoir which was created in 1911 when the Orman Dam was constructed. At that time the Orman Dam was the largest earthen dam in the world. In 1989 the Orman Dam was designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
Most of the recreational activities enjoyed at Rocky Point Recreation Area center around the Belle Fourche Reservoir. The water activities enjoyed by visitors include swimming, canoeing, kayaking, boating, and fishing. The game fish species found in the reservoir include walleye, yellow perch, channel catfish, black crappie, smallmouth bass, white bass, and Tiger muskellunge. The park has a fish-cleaning station and two boat launches with large parking areas. There is a shore fishing area located on the east side of the park.
Camping is another popular activity at Rocky Point Recreation Area. The park has a total of 62 campsites with or without electricity. Five of the sites are group sites. Most of the sites are near the Belle Fourche Reservoir. There are also two one-bedroom cabins available for rent. The campsites and cabins can be reserved online.
Other amenities found at Rocky Point Recreation Area include a fenced-in dog park, a playground, an archery range, horse shoe pits, a volleyball court, and sheltered picnic areas. Both flush and vault toilets are available at the park. The flush toilets are only available for use during the warm months.
Since the Rocky Point Recreation Area is part of the South Dakota state park system, a fee is required to enter the park. A state park day use or annual permit can be purchased at the park entrance. The park is open year-round.
