The McGregor Loop is a short and easy hike within La Pine State Park that takes visitors through some young pine forest before coming to the McGregor Viewpoint, offering a fantastic view of a sweeping bend in the Deschutes River.

You can begin the hike by parking at the trailhead just before the campground entrance. From here you can hike the loop in either direction. Hiking in a clockwise loop will save the viewpoint for later in the hike.

Along the way you’ll stroll through some lovely Ponderosa Pine forest, and pass two junctions - both for the Fall River Trail (continue on the McGregor Loop).

You’ll then finally come to the Deschutes River and the McGregor Viewpoint. This viewpoint is named after Donald G. McGregor in appreciation for his “many contributions to the betterment of Oregon’s scenic and natural resources.”

After enjoying the views, continue along the last short stretch of the McGregor Trail. You’ll cross a paved road, then arrive back at the trailhead where you started.
