Big Tree Loop via Cougar Woods Trail

One way to access the “Big Tree” within La Pine State Park is via the Cougar Woods Trail. In winter this is the only way to access it, as the road that allows you to drive closer is gated off. The hike is mellow and leads through some lovely pine forest. At the end of the trail you can choose to add on a small loop, or just turn around and return back the way you came.

Begin by parking at the trailhead off the State Park Road. The trail heads east from here. During winter months traction devices such as Microspikes may be helpful as the trail can get quite icy.

Continue along the Cougar Woods Trail until you come near the summer parking area for the Big Tree. Turn left. You’ll then reach the famous Big Tree. The tree is the largest (not the tallest) Ponderosa Pine in the world. It is estimated to be 500 years old and has a diameter of 8.6 feet. A wooden fence encircles the tree to protect it.

The tree is near the Deschutes River where there is a nice picnic area. At this point you can continue along the short Big Tree Loop to follow the river for a while, or return the way you came. If you take the loop you’ll come out at the summer parking area where you’ll then hop back on the Cougar Woods Trail again.
