This is a short trail beginning at the Clatsop Community College campus that heads up a steep but scenic section of forest before arriving at the base of the Astoria Column.
The route follows a gravel single track path as it climbs a steep route amidst moss covered trees and ferns in a shady area of forest for about .3 miles. The trail emerges at the grassy base of Coxcomb Hill, from where a final steep jaunt up the slope leads to the parking area and gift shop at the base of the Astoria Column tower. With about 375' of elevation gain from the trailhead to the parking area, one can take a rest here and enjoy the panoramic views, or cap off the hike with a final climb of the 164 steps up the spiral staircase of the top of the Column.
The hike trailhead is at the cement staircase leading onto campus from the intersection of 17th and Jerome. A very short way up, a signed gravel trail forks left from the walkway, and the single track climbing begins. When reaching the the community college parking lot, head to the left easternmost edge of the parking lot where a clearly signed path continues into the forest.
There are no amenities at the trailhead or along the hike until reaching the Column parking area, where a gift shop has water, snacks, and balsa gliders available, and a bathroom is available during the Column's open hours.
The trail is open from sunrise until sunset daily. Street parking is available along Jerome near the trailhead.
