The Upper Chalk Creek Loop is a relatively easy loop trail hike over a half gravel, half paved route in the neighborhoods of northwest Reno.
The trail is a part of the city's Peavine Trail Network, and intersects with several other trails in the area, including the nearby Las Brisas Loop which can easily be added to pad on some extra distance. Beginning across the street from Valley Wood Park, the trail is accessed behind a traffic gate, where the gravel path immediately leaves the paved road. The trail heads toward Chalk Creek, reaching an area where several paths intersect.
The Upper Chalk Creek Loop follows a gravel path on the east side of the creek and paved path on the west side. We found it easier to ascend on the gravel, since it takes the guesswork out of taking the correct fork back to the parking area. However all paths in this area are gradual and easy, and despite the surrounding homes, these trails give you some room to breathe.
As walkers, hikers, mountain bikers and runners all use these trails, you can expect to run into others.
A horizontal paved track near some homes and street access marks the turnaround point.
Water and bathrooms are available at Valley Wood Park. Onstreet parking is available throughout the neighborhood. Dogs must be on leash.
