Kaupanger Stave Church

The Kaupanger Stave Church is the largest stave church in Sogn og Fjordand. A stave church is a medieval wooden Christian church constructed using poles (“staver” in Norwegian). This church is a Norwegian Cultural Heritage Site. The nave is supported by 22 staves, eight on each of the longer sides and three on each of the shorter. The elevated chancel is carried by four free-standing staves. Unlike many other stave churches, the Kaupanger Stave Church has very few carvings inside the building. This church was likely built around A.D. 1140.

The inside of the church is available for viewing seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is a fee to enter the church. Free parking is located very close to the church.
