The 48-mile point-to-point journey from Santiam Pass to Olallie Lake, along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), offers an unforgettable backpacking experience. Starting at Highway 20 (Santiam Pass) and concluding at the Olallie Lake Resort, this route traverses the Cascade crest through the stunning Mount Jefferson Wilderness. Hikers are treated to scenic mountain views, unique geological features, beautiful lakes, and a variety of campgrounds, making this trek both logistically manageable and visually rewarding. The trail, moderately rated and multi-use, welcomes runners, hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders, though mountain bikes are not permitted on the PCT.

As you journey, expect rugged terrain with expansive views of Mount Jefferson (10,502'), Oregon's second-highest peak. This stratovolcano, adorned with glaciers, offers a dramatic backdrop to the wilderness. Despite its remote location, Mount Jefferson remains one of the most popular tourist destinations for hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, and photography.

The wilderness is interspersed with serene alpine lakes, nestled amidst dense forests and rugged peaks, popular among hikers for their tranquility and beauty. These areas are complemented by varied forests, including fir, hemlock, and cedar, as well as meadows that bloom with seasonal wildflowers, especially during the spring and summer months. Wildlife enthusiasts may find black bears, deer, elk, and a variety of bird species that all call this location home.

Streams and waterfalls cascade down the mountainsides and flow into various rivers and streams, enhancing the area's natural charm. Whether you seek challenging mountain climbs or peaceful lakeside retreats, the Mount Jefferson Wilderness has something for everyone.
